Advocacy and Rights Programme

The Advocacy and Rights Programme is a key initiative aimed at raising awareness, influencing policy, and advocating for the protection and promotion of women’s rights.

Through an intensified public relations strategy, media spokespersons in the organisation share information about gender-based violence and human rights throughout the year on radio, television, public engagements and newsprint. We reach over 1 million people per month through public participation and campaigns. Advocating for legislative reform and enforcement of laws focussing on the promotion and the protection of women’s rights, as well as women’s awareness of laws, regulations and policies that affect their rights and lives. The programme strives to create a safer, more equitable society for all by focusing on both public awareness and policy change.

Projects Under the Advocacy and Rights Programme:

Khusuleka Model:

The Khuseleka Model is a multi-sectoral approach to violence response and prevention, designed to uphold all basic victim rights as outlined in both the South African Victims Charter and relevant UN conventions protecting the rights of women and children. This model emphasizes collaboration with key government departments, including Justice and Constitutional Development, Health, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), and the South African Police Services, as well as civil society organizations and other institutions.

The Khuseleka One-Stop Centre at the Saartjie Baartman Centre, launched on May 27, 2024, represents an innovative approach to the prevention of violence and support for GBV survivors. The Centre offers a comprehensive range of services, including trauma counselling, psychosocial support, health care, legal assistance, child protection, and shelter services for women and children victims of crime and violence. This model integrates these services under the Victim Empowerment Programme to provide holistic support to survivors.

Advocacy and Awareness Raising:

This project concentrates on raising awareness about gender-based violence and women’s rights through targeted advocacy efforts. By engaging with various stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society organizations, and the general public, the project aims to drive meaningful change in attitudes, behaviors, and policies related to women’s rights.

Campaigns and Events:

The Centre organizes and participates in numerous campaigns and events throughout the year, aimed at mobilizing the public and raising awareness on critical issues affecting women. These campaigns often coincide with key dates like International Women’s Day, 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, and other significant milestones, ensuring maximum impact and visibility.

Through these campaigns, the Centre not only raises awareness but also educates the public on how they can contribute to the fight against gender-based violence and support the protection of women’s rights.

Our social work professionals provide dedicated support to clients in securing employment. They assist with job search strategies, resume building, and interview preparation to enhance clients’ chances of success in the job market.
